Private temazcal ceremonies in Tulum

The womb of Mother Earth

A ritual steam bath with fire, stones and herbs. A wellbeing practice with ancestral roots — not a tourist attraction.

Reconnecting with the roots of what is Mexico today

We are a project in motion. We take the ancestral temazcal ceremony wherever it is needed, and we build temazcales meant to stay.

A temazcal is not a tourist attraction. It is a wellbeing practice, and what we want is to give it back the place it deserves in life today.

It is not esoteric either, and it is not a matter of faith. Heat and steam do something very concrete: they bring you back into your body, they make you breathe slowly, and they let you be grateful for what you can actually see — the earth, the water, the fire, and the people sitting beside you.

Everything else follows from that. If the earth regenerates after every cycle, so do we. Understanding the cycle you are living is the beginning of understanding yourself. You do not have to believe in anything: what the temazcal does for you, you will notice yourself.

We share this for a concrete reason: knowledge that is not passed on gets lost. So every ceremony is also an explanation — where it comes from, what each part means, and why it is done this way. Not to make it sound mysterious, but so it can be understood and taken home.

That is the point: that the temazcal is explained well, practised well, and becomes part of the social fabric again.

And above all, so that we reconnect with the ancestral roots of what is Mexico today.

The journey

Seven chakras outside, four doors inside

Before going in

The breathing meditation

Before going in we sit outside, in a circle, and do a breathing meditation that travels through the seven chakras: seven energy centres that the tradition places along the spine, from the ground to the crown of the head.

It does something very practical: it slows you down, settles your head, and lets you go in with your body present instead of with the rush of the day. Each centre has its colour, and those colours are the ribbons you will see hanging along the path, on the altar and by the fire.

Inside

The four doors

Inside, the ceremony is divided into four stretches. Each stretch is called a door, and each door faces a direction and carries its colour: east yellow, south blue, west red and north white. The circle travels through all of them, always in that order.

The door is not just an idea: at the end of each stretch the entrance really does open, fresh air comes in, and the circle breathes again before carrying on. That is why there are four, and not one long sitting.

About the temazcal

A ritual, therapeutic and healing steam bath

Its origins go back to the pre-Hispanic medicine of the native peoples of the American continent. The temazcal is the symbolic representation of the womb of Mother Earth.

It is also a ceremony of rebirth and detoxification through abundant sweating, the use of herbs, and the way those taking part meet the four elements that sustain life.

Fire

The fire heats the stones for hours before the ceremony begins.

Earth

The dome is the womb. You go in in the dark, you sweat, and you come back out into the light.

Water

Water steeped with herbs falls on the red-hot stones and turns into steam.

Air

Between one door and the next, fresh air comes in and the circle breathes again.

Herbs

The medicine is in the plants

The temazcal contributes to physical, mental and spiritual health through the natural medicine held in plants. Every ceremony is prepared with the herbs the moment asks for.

  • Lemongrass
  • Rue
  • Basil
  • Eucalyptus
  • Chamomile
  • And many others

Benefits

Free your mind and spirit

You do not have to believe in anything. People who live the ceremony describe that it helps them:

  • Relax the body completely
  • Release emotional weight
  • Clear the respiratory and digestive tracts
  • Hydrate and renew the skin
  • Improve circulation
  • Strengthen the nervous system
  • Let go of stress
  • Sleep better
  • Wake up their connection with nature
  • Recognise the relationship between body, mind and spirit

A safe place for introspection and self-recognition, and a life experience worth living.

My wife and I took part in a private ceremony with Emilio. They took time to explain everything and make sure we felt comfortable throughout the Temazcal. It is an experience that we will always remember.

Our social contribution

Who is behind this

This project is run by Emilio and Octavio. We are real estate advisors in the Riviera Maya, and Tulum Temazcal is our social contribution: bringing ancestral wellbeing practices back into life today.

We are supported by Aho Realty Group, the agency we work from, focused on projects with soul: regenerative communities with wellbeing amenities such as the temazcal, in conscious living spaces in harmony with nature.

That is why we plant temazcales as permanent altars, and not as a seasonal attraction.
