Questions

What people ask us most

What exactly is a temazcal?

A ritual, therapeutic and healing steam bath, whose origins go back to the pre-Hispanic medicine of native peoples across the American continent.

It is a low, closed dome that represents the womb of Mother Earth. Inside, water steeped with herbs falls on red-hot volcanic stones and turns into steam.

Is it a tourist attraction?

No, and we work precisely so that it is not confused with one. The temazcal is a wellbeing practice with ancestral roots, and that is how we treat it.

Do I have to believe in anything?

No. It is not esoteric and it is not a matter of faith. The heat, the steam, the herbs and the breathing do something very concrete to the body, and you will notice that yourself, whatever you believe.

What is the ceremony like?

The fire is lit hours ahead to heat the stones. Outside, in a circle, we do a breathing meditation that travels through the seven chakras. Then you go in.

Inside, the temazcal opens and closes four times: those are the four doors. Between one and the next the entrance opens, fresh air comes in, and the circle breathes again. When you come out you rest, drink water and eat fruit.

What are the four doors?

The four moments of the ceremony. Each door faces a direction and carries its colour: east yellow, south blue, west red and north white. The circle travels through all of them, in that order.

Which herbs do you use?

Lemongrass, rue, basil, eucalyptus and chamomile, among many others. They are prepared fresh the same day and chosen according to what the circle asks for.

Are the ceremonies in groups or private?

All our ceremonies are private. We do not put strangers together: the people you invite come in, and no one else.

Where do they take place?

In Tulum. And since we are a project in motion, we also take the ceremony wherever it is needed: write to us and we will look at it.

Do you also build temazcales?

Yes. We plant temazcales as permanent altars in housing projects, regenerative communities, hotels and private homes. We design them, build them, and hand them over with their first ceremony.
